Non-Romantic Loves to Celebrate This Valentine’s Day

By Chloe Gillespie

Unfortunately, I am all too familiar with the subtle dread associated with this time of year. Valentine’s Day can feel like a slap in the face to those not in relationships, like a reminder of single status. Even to non-singles, the overwhelming nature of Valentine’s Day may not be your cup of tea. This day of love has potential beyond heart-shaped candies and gushy cards. Valentine’s Day is a perfect excuse to celebrate love for yourself, friends, and family.

Note to self

Self-love, as defined by Psychology Today, is the state of appreciation for oneself that stems from our actions. Without intentionally engaging in activities that promote a love for ourselves, we cannot expect this love to grow. Think of it like exercising; how do you expect your muscles to grow without working out? Similarly, to grow in self-love, we must actively work at it. Whether single or not, use this Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to engage in practices of self-care. This may translate to taking a yoga class, cooking your favorite meal, or meditating. There is no shame in being your own Valentine.

Happy Galentine’s Day!

Who said you cannot recognize platonic relationships on Valentine’s Day, too? As Leslie Knope of Parks and Recreation coined, “Galentine’s Day” (now recognized as a pseudo-holiday) celebrates strong female friendships. For those who experience Valentine’s Day related F.O.M.O., choosing to celebrate Galentine’s Day may be your answer. The pressure to be in a relationship on this day can be significantly lessened with support from friends. Write your best friend a note of appreciation or call up an old pal; sharing love does not have to be romantic.

Still feeling down-in-the-dumps because of Valentine’s Day? If you haven’t made plans with yourself or friends yet, reach out to your family. It’s easy to forget about family members until a birthday or holiday rolls around. Expressing love and showing your appreciation for your loved ones can easily make their day. Though it seems unconventional, even pets deserve love on Valentine’s Day. If all else fails, hopefully, a call with grandma or a cuddle with your dog can make you feel loved.

Valentine’s Day is loved by some and hated by others. But shouldn’t the Day of Love be loved by all? No one should feel excluded on this holiday when there are so many alternative ways to show love on February 14th. Valentine’s Day can feel suffocating, especially when the flood of social media posts roll in. Yet, Valentine’s Day can act as an empowering reminder of all the love in our lives, even without a significant other.
