GENDER
BINARY
Identifying as either male or female. Also referring to a societal system which allocates individuals into one of two sets of gender roles, gender identities, and attributes based on type of genitalia.
CISGENDER
Someone who identifies with the sex they were given at birth and does not feel that their gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned.
COMING-OUT
The point at which a person reveals their sexuality or gender identity to another person or persons, typically after having been identified otherwise by these persons up until this point.
DEADNAME
The birth name of a transgender person that is no longer used following transitioning/ their "coming out." Sometimes the person will adapt their deadname to fit their new gender identity or the deadname may be scrapped all together. It is transphobic to purposely identify the person with their deadname rather than their actual name following transition.
FEMME
An identifying term referring to a person whose chosen outward mannerisms, clothing, and general appearance are feminine (rather than masculine).
GENDER
Modes of behavior, physical appearance, demonstrated personality traits, and ways of thinking associated with one’s sex. These traits and behaviors are not inherent, but are instead based on social norms and expectations.
GENDERQUEER
Genderqueer or non-binary refers to people who don’t identify as female or male or identify as a combination of both. Genderqueer refers to one’s gender identity.
HERMAPHRODITE*
An incorrect term used to refer to an Intersex person. Used to refer to a person who has reproductive organs of both the female and male sex or doesn’t have a chromosomal pattern that aligns with just one sex. It is now considered an offensive term. NOTE: THIS TERM MAY BE CONSIDERED A SLUR.
INTERSEX
The state of being born with biological characteristics, such as reproductive organs or chromosomes, that are both male and female. It is not a disability or medical issue and occurs naturally within the human population. Intersex people may choose to eventually identify as one sex or the other, or they may choose to embrace a different identity altogether.
MISGENDERING
Using an incorrect pronoun (i.e. “he” or “she”) to refer to someone who does not identify with it. Essentially, the act of wrongly gendering someone. This can be intentional or unintentional, and is generally considered hurtful by the misgendered person.
NON-BINARY (ENBY)
A gender identity that does not prescribe to either masculinity or femininity. This can take many forms, and is not limited to specific physical expressions such as ways of dressing or preferred pronouns. The term is usually included under the Transgender umbrella, as it is an identity lying outside of one’s assigned sex.
PRONOUNS
A person's preferred and personally accurate form of address, i.e. she/her, they/them, or he/him.
THEY/THEM
They/them are pronouns often used to describe people who are non-binary which is a gender identity that does not align with masculinity or feminity. They/them pronouns can also be used for someone that does not want to conform to a female or male gender. They/them pronouns are unique to each individual’s identity.
TRANSGENDER
A gender identity that is outside of or different from assigned sex. Being Transgender means that a person does not identify with the sex/gender given to them at birth, but instead is either the opposite or otherwise different from it. This term is typically used to refer to women who were born with male physical traits or vice versa, but also includes Non-Binary, Genderqueer, and other non-traditional gender identities.
TRANSSEXUAL
This term is often used interchangeably with Transgender. It denotes someone who identifies differently from the sex they were assigned at birth, and who may or may not undergo hormone therapy/surgery in order to physically conform to their true identity.
TRANSVESTITE
also referred to as a cross dresser, a transvestite is someone who dresses outside of their identified gender; typically identifying males who dress in feminine clothing
