The royal family of England made a lot of headlines this year. It seems that breaking boundaries and pushing for societal change is the new norm - from Meghan Markle taking her husband Harry to women’s equality talks to Prince William actively supporting the LGBTQ+ community, the royal family is stepping up. The women of Tunis are standing up to sexual harassment and assault. A group of sixty women lined the street in front of the main seat of government in Tunis and performed choreography that was made famous by a Chilean feminist collective in late November. The women performed their dance wearing blindfolds, and completed the protest by pointing fingers and stating “the rapist is you!” Other similar demonstrations took place worldwide. Learn More

Actress and model Anna Karina died last week at the age of 79. One time wife to Jean Luc-Goddard, she starred in many French New Wave films such as A Woman Is a Woman, Vivre sa vie, Band of Outsiders, Pierrot le Fou, and Alphaville. Karina also had a brief side career as a pop star. Her career was rich and plentiful, and her presence on screen was radiant. She will be missed. Rest in peace, Anna. Full Story

FEM FINANCE

Although one of the largest areas in the Pacific-Coastal region of Colombia, Chocó is largely overlooked by local government for investment opportunities. This didn’t stop Chevron-Texaco from backing a women-empowerment initiative in the area. With their help, the Casa de Mujeres Empoderadas (House of Empowered Women) will be able to donate 100 bikes for students with a long commute to school. The program also aims to educate women in finance, entrepreneurship, and science and technology. Learn More

Greta Thunberg has yet another record under her belt, having recently been nominated as the youngest ever Time Person of the Year. In explanation for their choice, Time wrote that “she has offered a moral clarion call to those who are willing to act, and hurled shame on those who are not.” Thunberg expressed gratitude for the recognition, but quickly urged people to pay attention to other climate activists...and to climate change itself more than anything.
